Western Sydney MRC Team Up with Sydney Thunder

On Monday 16 July, thirty five young people were lucky enough to attend a Cricket Clinic facilitated by the Sydney Thunder

The Sydney Thunder are an Australian professional cricket team, competing in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League.

The school holiday activity was organised through the Sydney Thunder who reached out to Western Sydney MRC, wanting to engage with our clients in a number of ways. We were very excited by this opportunity and looked into organising a clinic for the upcoming school holidays. With the help of Liverpool City Council, the event was held at Edwin Wheeler Reserve. The event was a huge success with the young people who attended having learned a wide array of new skills.

The day began with some cricket drills that included bowling and batting practice, as well as other games and activities. By the end of the clinic, the young people were ready to participate in a competitive forty-minute game of cricket. We were very lucky to have a yummy pizza lunch, thanks to Derek Tweed from Liverpool City Council.

Darren Chan, a youth worker with Western Sydney MRC expressed how great it is that have been able to give newly arrived young people the opportunity to try different aspects of Australian culture and recreation. This, alongside a bit of fun, meant that the cricket clinic was beneficial in providing a pathway for young people to build up the confidence to try out new things and to go beyond their comfort zone. This is crucial in working towards social cohesion and working towards eliminating possible risks of social isolation.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to expose young people to cricket in an interactive and social environment.”

– Lachlan Steuart, Cricket NSW

It has been a pleasure to work with teams like the Sydney Thunder who see the value in actively engaging different communities. A big thank you to Lachlan, Luke, Matt, Johnno and Jonathan from Sydney Thunder and Cricket NSW who facilitated the Clinic, as well as Liverpool City Council for their fantastic contribution and support.
