On Wednesday evening, Western Sydney MRC was delighted to attend the SBS Meet the Broadcaster Sydney event at Chauvel Cinemas in Paddington.
In a recent SBS-commissioned report, Deloitte Access Economics quantified the economic dividend of increased social inclusion in Australia.
The report asked key questions about who we are as Australians, and how to leverage our diversity. What does it mean to be and feel included? What is the importance of seeing yourself represented in media, and how does that make you feel connected to the community?

- 2.8% of Australians identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
- 22% speak a language other than English at home
- Over 270 different ancestries are represented in Australia
- 1 in 5 people live with a disability
- 49% of Australians are born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas
- 46,800 same sex couple households
- 1 in 6 Australians are aged over 65
SBS showcased a fabulous selection of platforms and productions, providing attendees with the opportunity to understand scheduling, programming, production and community engagement.
SBS are at the forefront of community news, storytelling, language and multicultural content production. They are meeting the needs of communities and strive to genuinely represent the diversity of Australian society across all of their platforms.
Our Highlight
One of the many highlights was hearing from the Commissioning Editor of National Indigenous Television, NITV. NITV is Australia’s free, on-air television channel that commissions and acquires primarily indigenous-produced content. NITV is proud to host the only daily national news service dedicated to covering stories from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia.

With in-language programs for over 68 different languages, SBS offers something for so many Australians. The event, like SBS more broadly, was a fantastic celebration of cultural and linguistic diversity, and truly captured the multicultural melting pot that is a community in Australia.
