Western Sydney MRC welcomes Labor’s Multicultural Statement.
This is the Labor Party’s vision of the Settlement sector and its vision of social inclusive society and Australia. The Labor Party hopes that from this statement it can bring together community, to build on the success of our current multicultural Australia.
Western Sydney MRC champions our diverse community to be empowered, informed and connected. Our vision is a socially inclusive Australia where diversity is celebrated. We promote the principles of access and equity for diverse communities.
This statement is released as a new report is published reviewing the settlement experiences of 133 families.
The settlement experiences of 133 Syrian, Iraqi and Afghan refugee families living in NSW have been examined in a new report, which highlights the importance of English language training and other support programs to ensure refugees have a great start to their new life.
The report shows the refugees feel safe in their new home and accepted by their neighbours, as well as thankful to Australia for taking them in. They are also optimistic about their future and their children’s prospects, and they are keen to become Australian citizens.
We are extremely thankful to have been part of this research over the past couple of years. We thank UTS for their acknowledgement in the report. An extended thank you to our Information and Referral Officer; Meyer Nashed for his hard work in speaking and interviewing clients, endless follow-ups and commitment to ensuring our community’s and client’s voices were represented and heard. We would also like to make mention of the other settlement services that were acknowledged for their input and Accessible Diversity Services Initiative Limited, Community Migrant Resource Centre, CORE Community Services and SSI.
We still have much work to do. The ability to participate fully in the economic, social and political life of Australia is something that should extend to all Australians regardless of where they came from or where – their parents or grandparents – were born. This is an idea not fully realised. To achieve this requires the dismantling of those barriers that have prevented people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and new migrants from achieving their full potential
