The National Disability Insurance Scheme is also called the NDIS.
The NDIS is a new way for people with any type of disability to get the care and supports they need to live a better life.
The NDIS gives people with disability more choice, control and flexibility.
The person with a disability will be able to choose who provides that support.
The NDIS makes it easier for you to change service providers and will make sure you get the support and services you need at home and to access the community.
If you are getting supports at present and you are happy with what you are getting, there is no reason to change. People who already receive support will continue to receive support.
What supports and services can I get from the NDIS?
Every person with a disability has different needs and goals, so the support will be different for everybody. Some people will be provided funding to buy special equipment such as wheelchairs or to carry out modifications to their house. Others will be provided with supports to function at home or to have personal care assistance.
How does the NDIS work?
From the 1st of July 2016, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was introduced to in all states in Australia to give people with disability more choice and control over the supports and services they receive.
It’s important to know the NDIS in more detail and everything that can be paid for so that you get the most out of your funding, this means you will have more independence to live a good life.
To be able to become an NDIS funded participant:
- You will need to be under the age of 65
- You will need to live in Australia and have Australian citizenship or have documents showing you are a permanent resident
- Your disability is permanent and has a significant impact on your ability to do daily activities and routines.
You must prepare to apply for NDIS support and to prepare for the NDIS planning appointment:
Liverpool MRC can assist you to prepare for the NDIS. We would like you to help us to find out what people with a disability in the community need and the types of supports you require. Please complete a short set of questions to provide us with important information to help us understand your needs:
The NDIS brings many new and great opportunities for people with a disability. People with disability from countries where English is not the first language will benefit by thinking about their lives now, what is working well, what they would like to change and what they might like to achieve with support by the NDIS
To make sure people with disability and their families can learn more about the opportunities are available through the NDIS and you can participate in planning for supports, Liverpool MRC will be running a number of information sessions, please take a look at LMRC Calendar of Events to find out when an information session will be held in you’re the following languages.
